Actually, when we think about it, we can't really think of any other cross-species bond so strong that it leads to one saving the life of the other. Even if we could, it still doesn't take away from this. Dogs saving humans, humans saving dogs, we're always happy to learn of these kinds of stories, which are a great testament of how strong our friendship is.

“My girl saved our lives today”
While on our walk this morning my two dogs and I were attacked by two coyotes. They got ahold of Zuri, the blue and white girl, but thankfully she’s ok. Zeta, the one who likes to wear frisbees as hats, jumped in and attacked the coyotes for us, saving all of us. And yes she is also ok. Don’t be fooled by her goofiness. She is a bada*s and I know she’d d*e for me in a heartbeat. Nothing better than a good dog.

Aww, look at this goofy face. It's kind of amazing to know that dogs can embody the entire spectrum from “fierce fighter, ready to guard their pack and family in the face of danger”, all the way to “shmoopy so cute and silly, smiling to the camera while biting an object they absolutely shouldn't”. We're sure this wide range of emotions was a catalyst for humans befriending dogs to this level.

Two coyotes attacking like that is not normal. Have you contacted your vet to make sure you dont need a Rabies update or Immune Globulin shot for them?
Thats scary, I hope you guys recover quick mentally !
squidgeyww
They are both up to date on all shots thankfully. I checked Zuri over and don’t see any wounds. She is a bit shaken up and exhausted but otherwise ok. I believe they have pups close to our barn and that’s why they were so aggressive.
Dr_DoVeryLittle
If there were any punctures at all I would still call your vet to confirm they dont want to give another shot. Just like you would with tetanus after a puncture wound. Unless they just got the shot its sometimes better to be safe rather than sorry especially with something like rabies that doesnt show until its too late.
squidgeyww
I contacted my cousin who is a vet and she recommended getting rabies boosters just in case. So we have an appointment scheduled for tomorrow morning☺️ thanks for your concern!

Smart move. You just never know. Glad everyone is okay!

Thank you for listening to such excellent advice and acting on it. You’re an amazing dog parent!
I’ve seen a lot of people make sh** decisions about their animals, thinking a ten year old vax was fine since people only get an MMR shot “once.” It was impossible to argue with that kind of ignorance and they kept declining the 5-in-1 booster. Dog wound up catching a nasty case during a local outbreak of Parvo as an adult and ended up passing because of it.
They spent close to 7k US trying to save the dog when all they needed was a $45 shot every 1-2 years.
It was heartbreaking.

[Coyotes] can get very aggressive during pupping season. Half of one of our local hiking spots was closed last year for 6 weeks because the coyotes were being so aggressive with anyone coming near their dens
squidgeyww
Yes. Problem is it’s right by our barn and we go out there to check cows and take care of calves. Normally we see them out in the pasture from time to time but they usually avoid us. But they literally ambushed us today it was crazy.
mnbvcdo
Time to get a livestock guardian dog?
It's fantastic that your BC was able to protect you but man I'd be scared of it happening again or something happening to the livestock.
squidgeyww
We normally don’t worry about the coyotes because they never bother us or the cows. This was the first time in my 30 years of living here that something like this has happened. We are shocked.
mnbvcdo
That's crazy. Maybe this year is the first time they had puppies that close to your barn?
I hope they got scared off by your brave dog and it won't happen again.

I’m on my third border and if it’s one thing I know, it’s that borders are fierce protectors of the family. The other night when I was letting the dogs out, out of the darkness came two shepherd mixes acting totally crazy. My border chased one off the property and came back for the second one and drove it off as well. It happened so fast that I barely had time to call her back. By the time I did she was done and sitting on the front porch.
squidgeyww
Glad you have a good dog, too! They really are the best.
dingopaint
My last border ran off several coyotes that jumped our campfire one night during deer season. I refuse to camp, hunt or anything else in the woods without at least one dog now.
My current border hasn't encountered any aggressive wildlife, and he's a TOTAL goofball who loves everyone and everything - but we once had two aggressive cane corsos back me against a fence, and he threw himself in between and snarled so fiercely they backed off. It's the only time I've seen him growl in 7 years.
Border collies can definitely identify animal threats in a split second and show more courage than people give them credit for.
thequeenoflimbs
That's so cute! Man, I always see wild coyotes on our walks and they look huge! I'd be super scared if they attacked my dogs!
squidgeyww
I think the only thing that saved us was the fact that there was three of us and two of them. Otherwise it would have been very bad.
MischiefZoey
That kind of loyalty and courage is something really special.
squidgeyww
I know. She is my heart dog 💜

I've read that Eastern coyotes have some wolf genetics and they're larger and more aggressive. Generally people are safe from coyotes , but anywhere from the central United States to the eastern states and in Eastern Canada they seem to be more likely to be a problem. I wish there was a way to coexist though, many people where I live sh**t them and there hasnt been any aggressive behavior observed toward humans where I live
squidgeyww
We have always lived in peace with them on our farm. This was the first time in 30+ years that this has happened. We don’t want to ever sh**t an animal unless it poses a threat. And this time we may need to do something sadly.
bcdog14
I wonder what caused them to act so aggressively. That would be really scary.
squidgeyww
I believe they are making a den for pups right by our barn.
bcdog14
Well that might change things..I wonder if they could be relocated by an animal rescue group. We had fox babies under our barn but that's a completely different animal. They were so cute!
uberrob
It's also not abnormal. It's pupping season, and if you are entering into what they consider to be their territory, this can happen. Especially if there are two or more, they get braver.
My boy Hobbes and I have encountered them on our walks in the spring, and they definitely try to intimidate, but Hobbes won't have it... And they stay away.
wolfstories
Encounters are normal, attacks are not (unless the dogs are off leash)
squidgeyww
They are off leash. We live on an 80 acre farm. Never leashed while at home.
wolfstories
Did the coyotes attack you as well as the dogs?
squidgeyww
They didn’t get me. In the chaos we got away from them and got on the opposite side of a fence and one of the coyotes charged at me but the fence was the only thing that stopped it. They were mostly just distracted with the dogs. One coyote was way more aggressive than the other and the more docile one ended up backing off.
